Innovation centre opened by Chinese
China has opened its first UK innovation centre, on St John's Innovation Park.
To mark the opening, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, and Invest East of England hosted a reception.
James Gray, Invest East of England chief executive, said: "This is the remarkable result of a groundbreaking initiative by The People's Republic of China to encourage the Chinese to establish businesses in the UK and the rest of Europe.
"The creation of this park will not only benefit Chinese companies wanting to locate to our region, but will open opportunities for our science and technology companies in the East of England to explore new business markets in China."
Mr Gray added: "The new innovation park will also service Chinese students in the UK who may wish to set up enterprises in this country after graduating.
"There are currently around 50,000 Chinese students studying over here."
Invest East of England played a pivotal role in the Chinese coming to Cambridge, hosting official visits from Chinese ministers, conducting regional tours, property searches and introductions at Cambridge University.
The agency was also instrumental in organising and supporting St John's Innovation Centre at a detailed presentation in Shanghai.
Next month there will be a formal announcement about the new centre by science minister Lord Sainsbury when he visits China, plus an official signing ceremony with the two countries' science ministers.
