Chinese to open business centre

The first Chinese business incubation centre in Europe is expected to be up and running in Cambridge later this year.

The Chinese ministry of science and technology has approved proposals for the centre, which is likely to be based at St John's Innovation Park off Cowley Road.

Initially, there will be four investors, all Chinese, two based in the UK and two in China.

The idea is to encourage Chinese investment in the UK to develop commercial science and technology links between the two countries, and openings in Europe for Chinese businesses.

Dr Keming Zhou, project developer, says he is looking for businesses and venture capitalists in the UK to be part of what will be known as CIP.UK (China Innovation Park), although the overall organisation is known as China-Britain Innovation Park.

Dr Zhou says the project follows an agreement signed between science minister Lord Sainsbury and his Chinese counterpart at the end of last year.

"We have been evaluating various regions," Dr Zhou says, "and Cambridge is the preferred location."

Rend Shakir and Ting Katherine Zhang, managing director of China Business Solutions based at St John's Innovation Centre, have been asked to get involved. Ting said: "It is still at a very early stage."
